Exploring Their Interests through Electives
Every school year, LASD junior high school students choose from a wide range of electives that align with their interests and passions. These options go beyond the standard curriculum, giving students the opportunity to explore and discover new talents and skills. A variety of new electives have been recently added and others have been greatly enhanced.

Here are some long-time favorites:

• Band and Orchestra: Nurturing the love of music and instilling discipline.
• Chorus and Drama: Embracing creative expression through the arts.
• World Languages: Encouraging cultural awareness and language proficiency.
• Photography: Unleashing creativity through the lens.
• Journalism and Yearbook: Capturing memories and documenting school life.
• Broadcasting: Exploring media: voice and vision.
• Art: Fostering creativity and self-expression.
• Leadership: Cultivating future leaders.
• Computer Science: Preparing for a tech-driven future.

Through these electives, students have been able to explore, grow, and meet like-minded peers.

Innovations in Learning
Funded by an Innovation Grant from LAEF, exciting changes have been made to the junior electives program in the spring and fall of 2023. New electives have been added, and many existing electives have been greatly enhanced.

These junior high electives are brand-new or enhanced recently:

• Esports Game Design & Theory: Engaging in competitive video gaming while learning teamwork and strategy. (Blach)
• Robotics and Drones: Exploring the world of automation, engineering, and flight. (Egan & Blach)
• Applied Design: Fostering creativity through hands-on problem-solving. (Egan)
• Engineering: Pioneering innovation. (Blach)
• Video Production - Broadcasting: Building storytelling and media skills. (Blach)
• Maker Space Lab: Encouraging students to tinker, create, and invent. (Blach)
• Green Thumb Ecology: Connecting students with nature and environmental awareness. (Egan)
• Strength and Conditioning: Promoting fitness, health, and discipline. (Egan)

These innovative electives expose LASD junior high students to new perspectives and hands-on experiences that contribute to their growth as well-rounded individuals ready to meet the challenges of the future.
