LASD librarians help students develop a passion for reading, investigate topics that interest them and foster a love of learning. More critical than ever, librarians teach students to use information and technology to answer questions, solve problems and increase understanding.
Students learn to assess the credibility of information and practice its ethical and safe use. LASD strives to be sure that school libraries are evolving to meet the 21st century needs of students.
Watch this short video to find out why We Need Librarians More Than Ever.
Why Do School Libraries Matter?
- A well-curated library inspires kids to read extensively for pleasure and learning.
- A modern library is a portal into the world of digital information and eBooks.
- A school library provides a calm haven during lunch and recess where students can read, study, draw, make crafts, play games and visit with friends
"Librarians use their in-depth knowledge of children's books to connect students at every level with appealing books to encourage them to become self-motivated readers. Our school librarians are able to provide personalized library services for students because LASD librarians get to know students and their reading preferences over the course of many years."
LASD Librarian Ms. Burns
What is the LASD Library Program?
Students in grades TK‐6 visit their school library with their class 2‐4 times per month for a 30 minute lesson that incorporates state standards for library curriculum.
- Librarians help students find books they enjoy and expose them to a variety of literary genres.
- Librarians teach students to comprehend, evaluate and synthesize what they read to answer questions and solve problems.
- Librarians teach students to gather credible information from both books and digital sources and integrate the information while avoiding plagiarism.
- Librarians collaborate with teachers to support classroom projects and learning.
Students in Junior High can visit the library on their own or with a class during a project.
- The library is open all day during school hours with librarians on hand to assist students.
- Tutors or teachers are often available in the library to help students after school or in the morning before late start days.
- Many teachers schedule time in the library for their classes to use the computers, facilitate research and encourage independent reading.
- Teachers also use the library as a large space where their students can work in groups, give speeches, make videos and play educational games.
All LASD students can check out eBooks from the LASD online library for use on their personal devices at any time.
Many of our LASD school libraries are equipped with Chromebooks and subscribe to high quality digital collections of age appropriate information to support academic research. Our libraries have begun evolving into modern learning centers, but we need to continue to invest in our library staff, technology and digital resources to best prepare our students to be successful in a society where people constantly seek, create and share information. Many of our LASD school libraries are equipped with Chromebooks and subscribe to high quality digital collections of age appropriate information to support academic research. LAEF's annual grant is the leading source of funding to make LASD librarians a reality in our schools. Thank you to our LAEF donors for contributing this school year.
