Literacy
Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening, and Language
LASD’s Literacy programs immerse children in literature, research, and meaningful academic conversation. Students learn foundational skills as well as how to think about and communicate complex ideas. This comprehensive program involves three distinct components:
Students’ literacy-rich school days are filled with highly engaging reading and writing workshops, phonics, and lots and lots of meaningful conversation during collaborative work in every subject area. In junior high, electives like Journalism, Broadcasting, and World Languages allow students to apply their skills in ways that are important to them.
LASD school libraries offer students quick access to the very best in children’s and young adult literature. The dedicated team of LASD library specialists help ensure students have books to read that reflect the lives of all LASD students.
Classroom aides in LASD’s primary classrooms help ensure students are supported in learning to read and write. When students need additional help, dedicated intervention builds foundational skills in phonics, reading fluency, and comprehension.
LAEF supports LASD’s Literacy program by providing funding for librarians at all elementary and junior high schools.
